As a Canadian editor, I base my practice on Editors Canada's Professional Editorial Standards (PES2024). Please note that other standards use other terminology. "Developmental editing" is often used synonymously with "structural editing." "Line edit" is used synonymously with "copy edit." What PES2024 defines as "stylistic editing" exists as a blend of developmental and line editing.

MANUSCRIPT EVALUATION

Fiction and creative non-fiction works

After a complete first draft
Service:
I will read your book, keeping in mind the purpose, audience, and goal of your work. I will prepare an editorial report that includes the following: your book's highlights, its strengths, areas for improvement, and potential publishing paths. You can request additional elements. A manuscript evaluation should be tailored to what you are looking for to help you move forward.
Cost:
Approximately 0.75¢/word.

STRUCTURAL EDIT
Intended For:
Any longform content
When to Request:
After you are satisfied with the content of your work
Services:
I will provide comments in the margin of your work and an editorial report that examines the strengths and areas for improvement of your work's structure. For fiction and creative non-fiction, I will also provide a "story map" to give you a visual representation of your work.

Any project. This is often done in conjunction with a copy edit.

When you are satisfied with the content and structure of your work.

A stylistic edit involves evaluating your work on a sentence level. I will make detailed suggestions using tracked changes and comments in the margins. 
Some Elements of a Stylistic Edit:
A stylistic edit is all about clarity, consistency, and connection.
  • Is your language clear? Are transitions properly used to shepherd readers from one idea to the next?
  • Is your voice consistent? Is your language appropriate for your target audiences?
  • Does your language connect with your audience and convince them to feel or do what you want them to feel or do?
A stylistic edit addresses these questions and more to strengthen your language and shine a spotlight on your unique (human) voice.

Approximately 5.0¢/word. (Note: I offer bundle stylistic and copy edits at a lower total cost.)
COPY EDIT
Intended For:
Any project. This is often done in conjunction with a stylistic edit.
When to Request:
Final step before submitting your work, or before moving on to the formatting stage if self-publishing
Services:
A copy edit involves evaluating your work word by word. I will make detailed edits using tracked changes and comment in the margins when necessary. I will prepare a style sheet as an overview of the changes made and to ensure consistency.
Some Elements of a Copy Edit:
A copy edit begins with correcting spelling, punctuation, and grammar, but it does not end there. A copy edit
  • Ensures your work aligns with a chosen style guide
  • Has consistent regional spelling and word usage
  • Assesses your work for accuracy of facts and for conscious language Applies plain language principles when warranted
  • Formats text, preparing your work for publication.
